by We’ve been a little slow the past few weeks so this post is meant to bring us up to speed on what’s happened of significance in the AMD world during our hiatus.
The Underwhelming Radeon RX 6600 XT
We start with the underwhelming price-for-performance of the new Radeon RX 6800XT, which was introduced at an MSRP of $379 but likely sold for much higher at retail. While marketed against the likes of the nVidia GeForce RTX 3060, consistent benchmarks show it rarely (but sometimes) is able to beat it’s green rival.
A few of the usual suspects reviewed the early releases and came to almost all the same conclusions.
In a more sane GPU market, the RX 6600 XT release would have been even more ill-placed, but given the difficulty in getting GPUs are reasonable prices, perhaps this is AMD taking advantage of a heavy demand market and leverage whatever supply chains they have available to produce a mid-tier product at mid-premium prices. Hopefully, the current situation won’t last forever and we can expect to see more competitive or appropriately priced products coming from all GPU manufacturers soon.
